Members Contribute to Habitat for Humanity

District 65 members joined with East Carolina University employees and other volunteers to help construct a Habitat for Humanity home in Farmville. Tasks included staining the barn and painting the inside of the home. District 65 provided snacks and drinks for the volunteers during their morning break.

State Health Plan Open Enrollment Extended

State Health Plan Open Enrollment for 2014, originally scheduled to end Oct. 31, has been extended to Nov. 15. This provides all active and retired employees one final opportunity to change the State Health Plan option which they were automatically enrolled in.

General Assembly Wraps Up Session with Marathon Week

This week marked the end of a long legislative session. Starting on Sunday night the General Assembly kept up a grueling pace and SEANC lobbyists were there every minute advocating on behalf of public services and the state employees who provide them on topics ranging from the budget, the retirement system and workers' rights.

Cowell’s Risky Investment Bill Advances by Razor-thin Margin

As the General Assembly enters its final days of this session, we continue to advocate for public services and the people who provide for them. SEANC continues to fight against State Treasurer Janet Cowell’s attempt to gamble more of state employees’ retirement on high-risk investments like real estate and hedge funds. SEANC spoke out against SB 558, which would expand Cowell’s ability to play the odds, at this week’s House Finance Committee. Read all about it in this week’s Legislative Update.

Rules Trump Policies on Your RIF Rights

Reduction-in-force (RIF) rights are not my favorite topic because I only feel compelled to write about them when it appears that layoffs are eminent. However, since the budget proposals of the governor, Senate and House each provide for differing numbers of state facilities to be closed, it’s hard to dodge the topic, especially since one RIF right is currently in a state of confusion that our members need to know how to navigate.
