State employees preparing for encore winter weather event
Jan 30, 2026
State employees are preparing for another round of winter weather heading our way, and this time it may be more of the good stuff — snow!
Last weekend, a sheet of ice blanketed the state, making roads and sidewalks slippery and frigid. Despite power outages, the state avoided the catastrophic outcomes some had predicted.
This weekend, the entire state is projected to get some snow, with 3-6 inches forecasted for the Triangle area as of Friday morning. The snow will start Friday night and may last into Sunday. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph are possible, which could result in downed trees and power outages.
Department of Transportation crews have once again spread brine on the roads and continue to work around the clock in preparation. Governor Josh Stein declared another State of Emergency on Thursday.
Please stay off the roads if you can. Do not put yourself, your family, or state employees at work in danger. Prepare now for power outages by securing a heat source that does not require electricity, charging cell phones and power banks, and gassing up your car in case of emergency.
