State employees endorse Steinburg in Senate primary

RALEIGH – EMPAC, the political arm of the State Employees Association of North Carolina, announced today its endorsement of Rep. Bob Steinburg (R-Chowan) in his campaign for the Republican nomination for the N.C. Senate’s 1st District.

“Throughout his three terms in the House, Rep. Steinburg has proven himself to be a consistent champion for his constituents, a voice of action for the citizens of North Carolina, and a man who prioritizes people over politics,” said State EMPAC Chairman Tony Smith. “With Rep. Steinburg, we know he is not afraid to demand answers to the tough questions, and will continue to speak out for what’s right.”

Steinburg has led and elevated the conversation around prison reform following the deadliest year in the history of the state correctional system. Four state employees were killed during an attempted escape at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in 2017, just months after the murder of his constituent, Sgt. Meggan Callahan, at Bertie Correctional.

“Steinburg has been a tireless advocate for more investment, better equipment, more training and tougher policies to make our prisons safer in our communities,” said Smith.

A strong supporter of working families, Rep. Steinburg co-sponsored legislation in the 2017 session to raise wages, improve working conditions and enhance the benefits of state employees and teachers.
