Chevella L. Thomas
SEANC General Treasurer
Retired, NCCU accountant 33 years
County: Durham

When did you become involved in SEANC?
I joined SEANC at my orientation when I first started working at N.C. Central University in November 1984. I had just graduated college the prior year and didn’t know what SEANC was, but information was shared me and I joined District 21! I started getting more involved when District 27 was created in the early 1990s. Then I attended my first convention and the debates on the floor made me feel like I had a purpose! I thought, “This is awesome!” and I have not missed a convention since. I like a good debate.

What positions have you held including your current one?
I have been the treasurer of District 27 since it has been a district. I also served on the bylaws committee and was elected to the Scholarship Board of Trustees. I also served on SEANC’s first audit committee as vice chairman before being elected General Treasurer. I briefly served as 2nd Vice President before becoming General Treasurer a second time. I love being treasurer. I also serve on the state’s Supplemental Retirement Plan Board of Trustees and was just reappointed for a second term.

What has been the most rewarding part of being in SEANC?
The most rewarding part for me is meeting the staff and other members and having conversations with them. I like to have conversations with people and really get to know them. I have made some great friends that I never would have imagined were it not for SEANC.

What do you wish everyone knew about SEANC?
I wish people knew just how dedicated our staff are in fighting for, securing raises, and helping all state employees. I wish people knew just how dedicated our staff are in fighting for, securing raises, and helping all state employees. I hear people say all the time, “Why should I join? I am still going to get the same as you.” I hate that! If they knew how hard we work and how much it would help if we had more members, they would be more apt to join.

What are your hobbies?
Sports are my greatest hobbies. I love watching and playing golf, bowling, and tennis. I am a diehard NCCU Eagles and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan! I am also an active member/trustee in my church.

Tell us about your family:
I am the eldest of two sisters and three brothers. I have a brother that I never knew until about three years ago. His name is Walter, and my brother Ollie located him on Ancestry.com! When I finally met him, it was like looking at my father. He looks just like him, even though Walter had never met dad, they both had ponytails in common!

What is an interesting fact about you that people should know?
That I love Godzilla and scary movies.
