SEANC sponsors debates for three Council of State seats

Aug 26, 2016

You’ve heard a lot about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, Roy Cooper and Pat McCrory and Richard Burr and Deborah Ross this election. But you probably know very little about candidates for other offices that will have a direct impact on your lives.

This is your chance to find out more about them. SEANC will join the N.C. Institute of Political Leadership in sponsoring three debates around the state featuring candidates for lieutenant governor, attorney general and state treasurer in September.

The “Hometown Debates” series will take place on consecutive Tuesday nights in September. Candidates for lieutenant governor, Linda Coleman and Dan Forest, will debate in at Barton College’s Kennedy Theater in Wilson on September 13, followed by candidates for attorney general, Buck Newton and Josh Stein, at the Sunset Theater in Asheboro on September 20. The final debate will be between candidates for state treasurer, Dan Blue III and Dale Folwell, at the Statesville Civic Center on September 27. All three debates begin at 7 p.m.

The debates will air on UNC-TV’s NC Channel one day after each event at 9 p.m., and will be broadcast live on radio stations that are part of the NC News Network. The candidates will be questioned by local newspaper editors in each of the three locations.

In addition to SEANC, sponsors include the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, the John William Pope Foundation and North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives.

EMPAC, SEANC’s political arm, has already made endorsements in each of the three races, supporting Linda Coleman for Lt. Governor, Josh Stein for Attorney General and Dale Folwell for State Treasurer. It also announced endorsements for six other council seats and endorsed Roy Cooper for governor
